10 terrific Writing tips from Chelsea Cain

(sorry, only 2 preview tips for now!)

I recently had the opportunity to go to a talk by talented author Chelsea Cain at Jackson’s Books in Salem, Oregon on March 9, 2006. Cain always has a sparkle in her eye, and loves to joke. She is a pleasure to listen to and knows how to get you interested.

1. Don’t date your idea if you don’t want to marry it.

2. Make sure there is always something you love in your story.

A special thanks to Chelsea Cain for coming to Salem, we really enjoyed your talk!

Fun for a Rainy Day: Detecting Skills from Nancy Drew

How to lift fingerprints:

Supplies: scotch tape, a lead pencil, a piece of white paper, and sandpaper.

How to: first, take the pencil and scrub it on its side on sandpaper. Do this over a piece of paper to gather the “lifting powder.”

Whodunit: Then pour the powder on top of the area where you want to lift a print. Once the powder is on the entire fingerprint, shake the area gently, if possible. Carefully tear off a piece of scotch tape, and CAREFULLY place it on top of the print. Take off the tape and place on the paper.

Answer: Who did it? To find out, take prints of the people you suspect and compare them to the print you lifted. Then you’ll have the culprit!

Who made the shoeprints?

It's Elementary, my dear... Dr. Swanson

Description: In some Nancy Drew cases, the minds of the criminals are twisted into thinking things are what they aren't, which causes them to commit crimes. In this constant article, which I'm planning for an appearance in AEND every 3 months, Dr. Swanson (a psychologist) will make an "examination" of the criminal's mind, and explain what caused him to do what he did. Basically, it's a humor article, which I think you will enjoy.
